The Design Engineer is responsible for the accurate and on-time delivery of product designs that meet manufacturing standards. The Design Engineer is further accountable for the development of designs that conform to the requirements defined by the business leadership team. They will accomplish these responsibilities through customer design review and revision, conceptual layout, detailed design, and prototype development.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Research and development of new equipment (this can include design responsibilities)

  • Monitoring of equipment – including regular testing and ensuring maintenance tasks are carried out

  • Completion of documentation to illustrate and ensure compliance with both internal and external regulations and protocols

  • Oversight of processes and working to maintain optimization of the production line

  • Data collection, interpretation and report writing

  • Risk assessments of the equipment and processes being used. Continual evaluation of equipment and processes to ensure both efficiency and quality remain high

  • Budget responsibilities

  • De-bottleneck current manufacturing processes through the optimization of existing equipment, improved use of resources or the acquisitions of new technology & equipment.

  • Troubleshoot and solve existing manufacturing /quality problems to improve up time and first time prime quality

  • Confer with vendors to determine product specifications and arrange for purchase of equipment, materials or parts and evaluates products according to specifications and quality standards

  • Confers with management, engineering and other staff regarding manufacturing capabilities, production schedules and other considerations to facilitate productions processes.

  • Apply statistical methods to estimate future manufacturing requirements and potential

  • Test newly installed machines and equipment to ensure fulfillment of contract specifications

  • Evaluates, analyzes, and makes recommendations on products, designs and cost improvements to improve the competitive position of the company

  • Procures materials needed to construct prototypes and supervises the design engineering of new models

  • Tests ability of machines to perform designated tasks

  • Develops models of alternate processing methods to test feasibility of new applications of system components and recommends implementation of improved procedures

  • Analyzes test data and reports to determine if designs meet functional and performance specifications

  • Analyzes, evaluates and recommends cost improvement ideas through product, vendor and design changes

  • Uses computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering and design tasks

  • Other duties as assigned

Education and/or Experience

                     

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Chemical Engineering

  •  2+ years of experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment

  • CAD and PLC programming experience

  • 1+ years working in a LEAN environment strongly preferred

Skills, Abilities & Qualifications

  • Experience in industrial minerals, specialty chemicals, and material handling are a plus

  • Must be able to effectively work with customers (internal and external), and to work well with people at all levels of the company

  • Familiarity with database, project management, spreadsheet, and word processing software

  • Knowledge of Six Sigma is preferred

  • Experience with project commissioning is a plus

  • Familiarity with various manufacturing methods 

  • Familiarity with various engineering materials 

  • Self-motivated and results driven attitude 

  • Ability to effectively present complex information to both internal and external groups
